Viikon kuva: Radiance of the heart not hue of the skin, Abhinav Kafare

Intiasta Suomeen muuttanut Abhinav Kafare muistuttaa lähettämällään kuvallaan, 'Radiance of the heart not hue of the skin’, kuinka ihonväri on tosiaan vain pigmenttejä.
Kafare esittelee kuvansa englanniksi:
"There is a lot of stigma attached to vitiligo which makes the life of the people with vitiligo very difficult. This picture is an attempt to shed light on the beauty that lies within the body no matter if it fits into the binaries of black and white."
Vapaasti käännettynä: "Vitiligoon liittyy paljon ennakkoluuloja, mikä tekee vitiligosta kärsivien ihmisten elämästä erittäin vaikeaa. Tämä kuva on yritys tuoda esiin kauneus, joka löytyy kehosta, riippumatta siitä, sopiiko se mustan ja valkoisen binäärijärjestelmään vai ei.”
Aihe on ajankohtainen myös Suomessa, koska nykyinen eduskunta on antanut täysistunto-äänestyksissään luottamusta kansallissosialistista aatetta ihannoiville henkilöille. – Kuva muistuttaa kysymyksestä, miksi ihonvärin on uskottu vaikuttavan mihinkään muuhun ominaisuuteen kuin ihonväriin!
Samalla kuva on surullinen muistutus siitä, että vieraiksi tai vaarallisiksi uskottujen syrjintää tapahtuu Suomen lisäksi muissakin maissa, kuten Intiassa.
Valtavirrasta poikkeavia kohtaan tunnettu pelko on luultavasti rakentunut syvälle fysiologisiin vaistoihimme; se on voinut suojata lauman selviytymistä esimerkiksi silloin, jos tarttuvaa sairautta sairastava yksilö on torjuttu yhteisön ulkopuolelle. Modernissa yhteiskunnassa ei ole kuitenkaan perustetta syrjintään ihonvärin tai muun luonnollisen ominaisuuden tai sairauden perusteella.
Abhinav Kafare on monialainen taiteilija ja hän on aiemminkin puolustanut tasa-arvoa. Hän on purkanut valokuviensa avulla esimerkiksi sukupuoleen ja seksuaalisuuteen liittyviä intialaisen kulttuurin normeja. Hän on käyttänyt teoksissaan myös muita tekniikoita, kuten piirustusta ja maalausta. Kafare on tehnyt myös elokuvia.

Kuvan arvostelu
Kuva on sellaisenaan pysäyttävä, ja kuvassa on myös koskettava elementti, koska kuvan kohde pitää rinnallaan pientä kukkaa. Jos kukka olisi suuri, tai kuvattavalla olisi kukkapuska, kuva ei olisi välttämättä yhtä vaikuttava.
Kuvasta on rajattu ulos henkilön kasvot, mikä on varmasti hyvä ratkaisu, koska vitiligo saattaa johtaa monissa maissa syrjintään. Nyt katse kiinnittyy kasvojen sijaan tatuointiin, joka johdattaa pohtimaan, millainen persoona kuvassa oleva henkilö onkaan!
Kuva on kuvattu melko terävässä valossa, joka näyttää tuottavan värivirheitä ihoon. Kuvaan olisi voinut saada vielä lisää mielenkiintoa, jos valo olisi kohdistunut etualalla olevaan käteen, jolloin muu keho olisi voinut jäädä hieman varjoon.

- Lyhyt tarina: Liitä mukaan muutama lause siitä, mitä kuvasi esittää tai mitä haluaisit kertoa kuvasi avulla.
- Tekniset tiedot: Kerro myös, millä kameralla kuvasit ja mitä asetuksia käytit. Jos olet muokannut kuvaa, mainitse lyhyesti miten.
- Oikeudet: Varmista, että sinulla on oikeudet kuvaan. Jos kuvassa on henkilöitä tunnistettavissa, tarvitsemme kirjallisen luvan myös heiltä. Jos olet ottanut kuvan julkisessa tapahtumassa, jossa kuvaaminen on ollut sallittua, anna selvitys julkaisuoikeudesta. Sinun tulee antaa sähköpostissasi oikeus julkaista kuva Obskööri-julkaisussa, sekä sosiaalisen median kanavillamme.

Abhinav Kafare, who moved from India to Finland, reminds us with his submitted picture, 'Radiance of the heart not hue of the skin,' that skin color is indeed just pigments.
Kafare describes his picture in English:
"There is a lot of stigma attached to vitiligo which makes the life of the people with vitiligo very difficult. This picture is an attempt to shed light on the beauty that lies within the body no matter if it fits into the binaries of black and white."
The topic is also relevant in Finland as the current parliament has shown trust in votes to individuals who admire Nazi ideology. The picture brings up the question of why skin color is believed to influence any other characteristic than the color of the skin itself!
The image also serves as a sad reminder that discrimination against those deemed foreign or dangerous occurs not just in Finland, but in other countries like India as well.
The fear towards those who deviate from the mainstream is probably deeply embedded in our physiological instincts; it might have helped a community's survival, for instance, when an individual with a contagious disease was ostracized. However, in modern society, there is no justification for discrimination based on skin color or any other natural trait or disease.
Abhinav Kafare is a multi-disciplinary artist and has previously advocated for equality. He has, for example, used photography to deconstruct sex/gender and sexuality norms in Indian culture. He has also employed other techniques in his works, such as drawing and painting. Kafare has also made films.

Picture Review:
The picture is arresting as it stands, and it also has a touching element because the subject holds a small flower by his side. If the flower were large, or if the subject had a bouquet, the picture may not be as impactful.
The person's face has been cropped out of the picture, which is likely a good decision, as vitiligo can lead to discrimination in many countries. Now the focus shifts from the face to the tattoo, prompting us to ponder what kind of personality the person in the picture might have!
The picture is shot in fairly sharp light, which appears to produce color errors on the skin. The image could have been more interesting if the light had been focused on the hand in the foreground, leaving the rest of the body somewhat in the shadows.

Short Story: Attach a few sentences about what your photo represents or what you would like to say through your photo.
Technical Details: Also state which camera you used and what settings you applied. If you have edited the photo, mention briefly how.
Rights: Make sure you have the rights to the photo. If there are identifiable individuals in the photo, we also need written consent from them. If you have taken the photo at a public event where photography was permitted, provide documentation of the publishing rights. You should grant in your email the right to publish the photo in Obskööri, as well as on our social media channels.
